Mr Bismark Tawiah Boateng

'Our task is to increase NDC votes in 2016'

The newly elected Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Bismark Tawiah Boateng, has called on the rank and file of the party in the region to unite to further strengthen the party’s chances of retaining political power in 2016.

‘Our main task is to increase the presidential votes and add more constituency seats to the seven that we currently occupy and I am prepared to work with all,” he stated.

Mr Tawiah Boateng made the call in his maiden meeting with the press after he won the highest regional position of the party at its congress at Nsawam on November 15. He secured 129 votes to beat three other contestants, namely Messrs John Owusu Amankwa who had 106 votes, Oheneba Addo, 49 votes and Alhaji Sumaila Mahama 37 votes.

Family affair

According to Mr Tawiah Boateng, although the regional congress was a family affair which came off peacefully and was very transparent, obviously some of the contestants would not be happy with the outcome of some of the results and called on all to put the past behind them and unite.

The region has 33 constituencies out of which the NDC occupies only seven seats and in the 2012 election, the party secured 43 per cent of the presidential votes as against the NPP’s 56 per cent.

In answer to a question as to how the NDC would improve its fortunes in the region, Mr Tawiah Boateng stated that he, together with the entire regional executive, would soon come out with a well-laid out plan to win more support for the party to convincingly win the 2016 election.

He called on the founder members of the party and all those who once occupied positions since 1992, including diplomats, metropolitan/municipal and district chief executives, as well as parliamentarians, to lend a helping hand in making the party great and strong to convincingly clinch victory in the 2016 election.

Mr Tawiah Boateng expressed his appreciation to all those who supported him and the other contestants in the various positions.

Organisers

The newly elected Regional Organiser, Mr Ransford Owusu-Boakye, was happy that the youth participated massively in the congress while Mr Appau Wiredu Haruna, who was elected the Regional Youth Organiser, said he would soon be in tertiary educational institutions in the region to solicit support from the students.

The full list of the new regional executive is as follows: Mr Bismark Tawiah Boateng, Chairman, Mr Samuel Kwaku Adjei and Madam Stella Ansah, Vice Chairmen, Mr Oliver Kervor, Secretary, Mr Francis Annor Dompreh Deputy Secretary, Mr Ransford Owusu-Boakye, Organiser, Hackman Seidu Kabore, Deputy Organiser, Baba Jamal, Propaganda Secretary, Selorm Agbesi, Deputy Propaganda Secretary, Samson Kwakwa, Treasurer, Okai Minta, Deputy Treasurer and Madam Evelyn Korang, Women’s Organiser.

In a related development, George Folley reports from Koforidua that the newly elected Eastern Regional deputy secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Francis Annor -Dompreh, has commended delegates for the honour done him.

He said the overwhelming endorsement by delegates went to show that the grass roots believed in his message to maximise votes for the NDC in the Eastern Region.

Mr Annor-Dompreh, until recently a practising broadcast -journalist at EMAK FM,  a private radio station in the Koforidua Municipality, had 176 votes to beat his closest challenger, Christian Sewordor who had 105 votes while the third contestant, Foster Asante polled 43 votes.

He said he was happy that the Eastern Region did not experience any nasty incident and that the same spirit would be carried through the electioneering period.
