The 2016 Presidential Candidate of the People's National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, has appealed to the electorate to vote out the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prevent it from totally collapsing the economy.

He attributed the challenges facing the Ghanaian economy to the leadership failure of the NDC and said when voted into power as president, he would reverse the trend.

Politics of deception

He said both the NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) came to power on the ticket of political gimmicks, deception and lies and that was why they found it difficult to successfully manage the economy.

"The NDC and NPP lack foresight, they lack the needed leadership qualities and have persistently and consistently insisted on engaging in lies to get their votes but eventually do little to respond to the plight of the masses," he lamented.

Utility tariffs

Dr Mahama described the recent increases in utility tariffs and the introduction of the Energy Sector Levy as insensitive on the part of the government.

He, therefore, promised to reverse the trend when voted for to become the President in 2016.

Youth empowerment

The 2016 presidential candidate reiterated his commitment to economically empower the youth and indicated that he had planned to undertake several interventions to tackle the unemployment problems confronting the nation.

He criticised the NDC government for its inability to reduce graduate unemployment and said a PNC government would initiate pro-poor interventions aimed at creating opportunities towards empowering the youth and preventing them from engaging in crime and prostitution.

Agriculture

Turning his attention to agriculture, Dr Mahama lamented the poor contribution of agriculture towards the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He gave an assurance that he would invest heavily in that sector to lessen the importation of agricultural products that could be produced locally.

He said attention would also be given to irrigation in the three northern regions to ensure all-year-round farming and also ensure guaranteed prices for sheanut and tomatoes, just like cocoa.

Dr Mahama made those statesments on separate platforms during his ‘Thank you’ tour to the Upper East Region in the company of the National Chairman, Mr Bernard Mornah, as well as regional and constituency executives.
