According to a statement issued in Accra last Friday, the meeting was called by the President to acknowledge the toil and contribution of the former appointees to governance and the sustenance of the party.

It said the meeting was also a platform for Mr Mahama to thank them for their invaluable service to the nation.

“More than 100 former government officials, including Dr Mary Grant, Madam Aanaa Ennin, Alhaji Issifu Ali, Dr Kwesi Botchwey, Dr Obed

Asamoah, Mr Ato Ahwoi, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, Mrs Cecilia Johnson, Nana Oye Mansa Yeboaa, Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho and Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi attended the meeting,” it said.

According to the statement, the President said the NDC was blessed with a large pool of people who had served in various capacities in former administrations.

“We are here because of what you started many years ago.

Thank you for being trailblazers. We appreciate your knowledge, talent and experience. Let us continue to work together”, the President said.”

Mr Mahama said he looked forward to deepening the bond between the present and former appointees to enable them to share experiences, as well as strengthen the institutional memory for the benefit of the country.

The interaction, which was warm and inspirational, was interspersed with voluntary speeches by the senior comrades.

The PNDC, a military government, led by Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, governed Ghana from 1981 to 1992. The PNDC metamorphosed into the NDC, which ruled the country from January 7, 1993 to January 7, 2001 when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over.

The NDC came back to power in 2009 when President J.E.A Mills, now of blessed memory, won the 2008 elections.

President Mahama took over after President Mills’s death in 2012 and subsequently won the 2012 election.
