Rise above partisanship - Christian Council charges

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has called on Ghanaians to rise above partisan affiliations, religious segregation and ethnic differences and put Ghana first.

It has also called for a change in the psyche, attitudes and behaviours of the citizenry to ensure that national development remains supreme.

Addressing a press conference in Accra yesterday, as part of an agenda to promote national cohesion and peace, the General Secretary of the CCG, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, said the drudgery and sacrifices of the pioneers of the nation united people from all walks of life in the territories of the country.

The sacrifices, he said, only sought to foster tribal, ethnic and national cohesion and promote a nation with one people and a single destiny.

In his view, the sacrifices were not for any political party, ethnic, tribe or religious group and had helped the nation attain regional and global recognition.

“Unfortunately, we now find ourselves in a country where the seeming division of the two major political parties seem to submerge the allegiance of the citizens to their motherland.

“This situation calls for a renewal of the mind, body and soul of the citizenry,” he charged.

“It calls for a change that puts the larger interest of Ghanaians first rather than the selfish parochial interest of any persons or group of persons.

“A change that puts the poor and vulnerable first,” he added.

Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong urged all Ghanaians to be vigilant and not be disillusioned by the promises of any individual or group.

He called for patriotism and the utilisation of “our God-given gifts of mind and strength” to develop the nation while striving to protect and preserve the national heritage for generations to come.

“The Christian Council admonishes all to seek and pursue peace knowing that Ghana has been put to the test. We must remember that together we are one people, one nation with one destiny. Africa is watching, the entire world is watching and God is watching,” he said.
