Twum Boafo damns 'Winner Takes All Committee' as absolute fuss

A member of the ruling National Democratic Congress and Executive Secretary of the Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum Boafo has questioned the intent and composition of the “Winner Takes All Advisory Committee” of the Institute of Economic Affairs, saying activities as such should not be entertained at all in the country.

He suspects the group purposes that some power-sharing arrangements are formed to afford the opposition New Patriotic Party some space to share in the rulership of the country and this he says cannot be accommodated under Ghana’s constitution.

He was speaking on Radio Gold in reaction to a Daily Graphic publication on Wednesday which reported that the committee had met with leaders of the NPP to seek their views on improving governance and promoting peace and stability in the country.

He pointed the committee, whose members he said were known sympathisers of the NPP, to the sort of work they need to do, saying they should rather direct their energies towards planting the winner-takes-all virtues within the NPP because they first need it.

“Why is the winner takes all committee not talking about the internal workings of the NPP? If they are meeting the NPP they should start with what happened in the NPP during their own internal primaries. After Nana Akufo-Addo won the elections… what did he do? He reconstituted the deputy communications appointments all to get rid of one person - Michael Ampong. So the winner takes all committee should address those things… After all the things that Nana Akufo-Addo did to people he was opposed to inside his party, what business do they have to come to talk to us about winner takes all? And exactly what is winner takes all? Why do people go and contest for anything? Or is it because John Mahama is the president so suddenly…” he said.

He continued, “Look, this kind of, excuse me to use the word, ‘rubbish’ must stop. We have a country to run. We have a constitution that we follow so let us follow the constitution of this republic. If you want to win a parliamentary seat, you want to win the presidency of this country, if you want to be an assemblyman, you contest elections. If you win, you are what you contested for, that is how it’s run. We are not going to have a half-way house running this government simply because the NPP hasn’t won elections.”
