The Upper West Region (UWR) has become the first region in the country to give a one-time confirmation to all the Municipal/ District Chief Executives (MDCEs) nominated by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

This was after all the 11 nominees, including two females, were approved by majority votes when they appeared before their respective assembly members.

Each of the nine nominated males won unanimously with 100 per cent whilst the two females were endorsed by an overwhelming majority of 98 per cent and eighty-four per cent respectively by their assemblies. All the MDCEs have been sworn into office by the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan.

The newly confirmed MDCEs include Alhaji Tahiru Issahaku, a Chartered Accountant for the Wa Municipality, Mr Nadi Imoro Sanda, an Engineer for Daffiama/ Bussie/ Issa (DBI), Mrs Christine Bonbanye-Amadu for Jirapa and Mrs Kate Langkono for Nadowli/Kaleo.  The others are Mr Moses Jotie, a tutor for Wa-East, Mr Martin Bomba-ire, a former Manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme for the Lawra District, and Mr Karim Nanyua, a tutor for the Sissala-East District.

At all the assemblies, the elections which were supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) went on  without any hitches. They also got the blessings of all the Members of Parliament (MPs) in the region who were in attendance. The  MPs comprised six from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and five from the  New Patriotic Party (NPP) who affirmed that for the success of their constituencies, they would give their unflinching support to the new MDCEs. The atmosphere at the 11 assemblies was characterised by joy and merrymaking which portended a bright working relationship in the future. In attendance were the various party executives of the UWR branch of the NPP, including their Regional Chairman, Alhaji Abdul Raman Abubakari Short.

Swearing -in

Swearing-in the MDCEs, the UWR Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan, expressed his joy that the various assemblies had carried out their basic duties to support the government’s quest to solve the myriad of problems facing the country at top speed.

He noted that by their one-touch decision, they had shown that they were ready to work closely with the MDCEs.

The  MPs, including Mr Alban Sumana Kinsford Bagbin of Nadowli/Kaleo and Dr Francis Dakura Bawaana of Jirapa, were happy that the assembly members had approved the MDCEs. They pledged their support for them since the districts and the region belonged to all of them, in spite of  their political background.

For his part, Alhaji Raman Abubakari Short said he was happy with the overwhelming approval by the assemblies. Present was the Chairman of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Mr Anbataayela Bernard Mornah,  who was also happy at the turn of events .
