Adama’s date with destiny as he challenges for WBA title

Ghana’s Osumanu ‘Machine Gun’ Adama has a date with destiny tonight as he challenges one of the best fighters in the world, Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, for his WBA and IBO middleweight titles  at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

It is a long awaited chance for the 33-year-old Ghanaian fighter to have a   title shot and must find the best way to handle the tough champion who has a fight record of 28 bouts with  25 knockouts.

What's the big deal surrounding GGG? The 31-year-old has mauled all of his opponents as a professional. His name has been mentioned as a potential opponent for almost every fighter considered to be among the sport's elite.

In his last fight on November 2, 2013,  Golovkin fought at “The Mecca of Boxing”, Madison Square Garden, where he dominated hard punching challenger Curtis Stevens over eight rounds earning his 15th knockout in a row and ninth straight title defence.

Monte Carlo also seems to be his favourite venue, as his last fight there on March 30, last year saw him stop former world champion Nobuhiro Ishida in the third round with a battering right hand, a knockout which is at the top of the “Knockout of the Year” polls by fans and media.

“With his spectacular power and amazing knockout ratio, Golovkin represents the very best of boxing,” said Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves of South Africa, promoters of the fight.

"Gennady is one of the hottest sporting athletes in the world right now and we’re honoured to promote his return to Monte Carlo. His debut at the same venue last March was attended by celebrities from all over Europe, including Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, as well as boxing legend Marvin Hagler, who all watched from ringside.”

“I couldn’t think of a more exciting fighter to top the bill in Monte Carlo, particularly as he did so well last time. And credit to the challenger, who is one of the few fighters willing to step in against Golovkin.”

Adama, 22-3 with 16 knockouts, isn't as celebrated or even as hot a name, but he is an experienced fighter who already had an opportunity to fight for a world title. He lost a unanimous decision to then IBF champion Daniel Geale in March 2012.

This bout promises to be competitive and it affords boxing fans a chance to see one of the best in the sport in action.
