Garcia retains WBC, WBA titles

Danny Garcia retained his WBC and WBA titles by defeating Mauricio Herrera last Saturday night.

The American also remained undefeated by winning the light-welterweight bout in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, on a majority decision. Two judges scored the bout 116-112 in favour of Garcia and the third had it 114-114 as Garcia improved his record to 28-0. Herrera, also a American citizen, dropped to 20-4, including seven knockouts.

Garcia, who is of Puerto Rican ancestry, had the crowd of 10100 at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez on his side. He was making the fifth defence of the WBC title he won by beating Mexico's Erik Morales on points in 2012.

It was also the fourth defence of the WBA title Garcia took from England's Amir Khan with a fourth-round stoppage in 2012. In September last year he beat Argentina's Lucas Matthysse on points.

Herrera, 33, had beaten WBO champion Ruslan Provodnikov and performed well against unbeaten Mike Alvarado and Karim Mayfield in fights that he lost on points. And he also gave the 25-year-old Garcia, who had won 16 of his fights inside the distance, a run for his money.

On the undercard, heavyweight Deontay Wilder knocked out Malik Scott after only 96 seconds. Wilder has now won all 31 his professional bouts inside the distance.
