Reconsider Powers-Kamoko fight since GBA Prez calms fears

The Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council (REGSEC) has urged the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to reconsider its decision on the fight between Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku) and Ayittey Powers scheduled for Thursday (May 15) in the interest of peace, harmony and national security.

It made the appeal last Friday evening during a meeting at the office of the Greater Acrcra Regional Minister involving the REGSEC, the Ga Tradional Council and religious leaders on the matter of the ban on drumming, abatement of noise, and Thursday’s fight in particular.

According to the regional minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo (who chaired the meeting), after careful deilberaions, a task force had been constituted to work in collaboration with the police service and respresentatives from both Osu and Ga tradional councils to monitor and enforce the  abatement of excessive noise in the metropolis during the period of the ban.

He explained that apart from the task force, no other persons or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis.

The minister called on the Christian community and the tradional council to show respect for one another and restrain their followers from making deterogaray statements about the beliefs and practices of one another's religion.

Meanwhile, GBA president, Peter Zwennes, has allayed fears of boxing fans that any member of the Osu or Ga Traditional Council could scupper Thursday’s bout at the Accra Sports Stadium, writes Kwame Larweh.

Mr. Zwennes was hopeful that everything would be smooth on Thursday night.

“We are set and everything is in order for the anticipated bout on Thursday,” he told the Graphic Sports in an interview last Saturday.

He described as untenable the directive from the Ga Traditional Council that the bout be postponed due to the noisy nature of fans that could seemingly disturb the gods who would need silence and calmness in this period.

“You can’t use the noise making of fans as an excuse to ban the bout; if two Ghanaian boxers were to fight in Europe or the US and Ghanaians at home watch and cheer them would the Ga Traditional Council stop the fight in the US?” he asked.
