No coronation match for Wa All Stars

There will be no coronation match for the winner of this year’s Ghana Premier League as the organisers of the competition, Premier League Board (PLB), have decided to hand over the coveted trophy to Wa All Stars after their final game against Sekondi Hasaacas at Sekondi tomorrow.

Mr Ashford Tettey-Oku, chairman of the PLB, said the cancellation would enable the winners to start early preparation towards next season, as well as their continental assignment.

Meanwhile, the PLB has condemned the assault of Mr Albert Aryeetey Commey, CEO of Aduana Stars, during their 29th week Ghana Premier League match with Wa All Stars in Wa last Wednesday.

A statement signed by Mr Oku said, “violence of any form should be condemned in our league. Violence either on a fan, a player, a referee and, let alone, Mr Commey, an executive member of the Ghana Football Association, should not be tolerated”.

“The PLB condemns such display of intolerance, regardless of whatever provocation that may have ignited the attack. Physically assaulting any person at a league centre is a criminal offense, which the PLB does not support.”

It was alleged that the Aduana Stars administrator was attacked by some local fans after protesting against a second penalty kick against his side.

As the Ghana Premier League ends tomorrow with the stakes high at some centres, the PLB called on all stakeholders, particularly club officials, match officials and fans to adhere strictly to the tenets of the game to avoid any further chaos.

“The 2015/2016 Ghana Premier League season has been largely successful and the onus is on all stakeholders to ensure that the league ends on a positive note,” the statement urged.

It warned that anybody who will take the law into their own hands to bring the game into disrepute will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.
