Otumfuo Cup launched
Premier League leaders, AshantiGold, have promised to be party spoilers and perhaps deliver one of the most painful defeats to Kumasi Asante Kotoko as the two are billed to clash on September 20, 2015 for the Otumfuo Cup to be played at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The anticipated crunch match, which was officially launched on Tuesday in Kumasi, formed part of Kotoko’s 80th anniversary celebration and also in honour of the life Patron, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In a message read on his behalf at the launch, the CEO of AshGold, Kudjo Fianoo, said Ashgold were focused to complete an eight-match defeat on Kotoko by the close of the season.
Indeed, the two were expecting to win their MTN/FA Cup round of 16 yesterday to set up what would be a prelude to the crunch duel.
AshantiGold played Inter Allies while Kotoko hosted former Premier League campaigners Real Tamale United (RTU).
The Otumfuo Cup is being organised by Mysports.org, a sports event organisers with support from the Despite Group of companies and the Manhyia Palace.
In an apparent response to AshantiGold’s bluff, the CEO of Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti said Kotoko was poised not to disgrace the King but rather rise up to the occasion to honour him.
He seized the opportunity to outline a detailed programme for the clubs 80th anniversary celebrations which included the official launch on July 28, a float for fans on August 22 and an inter-regional Circles tournament on August 29 of which the winner will play the Kotoko youth team on September 4, 2015.
Asante Kotoko would also play Romanian giants, FC Petrolul Ploiesti in an international friendly on September 4, a street carnival on September 12, a dinner and awards ceremony on October 3 and a Moslem and Christian thanksgiving service on October 9 and 11, 2015 respectively.
