Ghana international Abdul Majeed Waris was on target on his Ligue 1 debut as Valenciennes beat Bastia 3-2 on Saturday.

Valenciennes took the lead in the 33rd minute when Togolese Mathieu Dossevi converted a right-footed shot from close range into the net.

The home side doubled their advantage just two minutes later when Dossevi was found by Waris allowing the striker to grab his second of the night.

Waris turned from provider to scorer after the break as he collected a pass from Tongo Doumbia to slot home with his left and seemingly put the game out of sight.

Bastia grabbed two goals later on but the comeback could not overturn the deficit.

“The win was very important and good. We did really well even though at the end we lost concentration and we kept on working really hard till the end,” Waris said after the game. “I’m very happy that I scored and excited that the team won because we need the three points and we had that.”
