Queiroz’s World Cup masterplan faces Welsh test

It is the first real window into Queiroz's vision for the Black Stars and perhaps the most revealing indicator yet of Ghana's readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After years of inconsistency and criticism over the team's lack of cohesion, particularly under his predecessor Otto Addo, Queiroz now has the opportunity to show Ghanaians what his Black Stars will look like.

And for supporters and sports media desperate to understand the direction of a team that has often flattered to deceive in recent years, tomorrow’s match could offer valuable answers about the team’s identity, tactical direction and potential World Cup starting XI, as the Black Stars enter the final phase of preparations for North America.

While Wales narrowly missed out on qualification after a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in March, Craig Bellamy's team remain a formidable European outfit renowned for their organisation, physicality and tactical discipline.

In many respects, they offer Ghana a rehearsal for what lies ahead against England in Boston on June 23.

Ranked fourth in the world, England are widely regarded as the strongest side in Group L, which also includes Panama and Croatia.

Wales may not possess England's depth of talent, but their structure, intensity and direct approach should provide Queiroz with valuable insight into how his team might cope against elite European opposition.

The fixture also presents an opportunity for the Portuguese coach to address some of Ghana's long-standing concerns, such as defensive vulnerability, set-piece weaknesses and midfield balance that have all undermined the team in recent campaigns.

Cardiff will provide the first indication of whether Queiroz has found solutions, despite the former Real Madrid, Portugal and Iran coach possessing an enviable pedigree and the confidence that comes with leading a fifth nation to the World Cup.

When he was unveiled in Accra, Queiroz left little doubt about his philosophy. "I am a winning coach," he declared. Now comes the first chance to back up those words.

The 28-man group assembled in Cardiff last week features a blend of experience and fresh energy, with five goalkeepers, nine defenders, seven midfielders and seven forwards competing for places in the final 26-man squad that must be submitted to FIFA by June 12.

Competition is particularly fierce in goal, where Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare, Solomon Agbasi and Joseph Anang are battling for three places, while Ajax youngster Paul Reverson is widely viewed as a prospect for the future.

The initial squad selection suggests a manager seeking a balance between experience and renewal. The return of centre-back Abdul Mumin following a lengthy injury absence and wing-back Baba Rahman after his self-imposed exile has strengthened Ghana’s defensive options, while the continued presence of Alexander Djiku, Alidu Seidu, Jonas Adjetey and Marvin Senaya gives Ghana depth across the back line.

The midfield remains Ghana’s engine room, with the experienced Thomas Partey expected to dictate proceedings.

The Villarreal midfielder is joined by emerging talents Caleb Yirenkyi, Kwasi Sibo, Bonsu Baah and Augustine Boakye, all eager to force their way into the team’s starting lineup.b

Further forward, much attention will centre on Antoine Semenyo, whose prolific season has elevated him into one of Ghana's most dangerous attacking weapons.

Captain Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams, Ernest Nuamah, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Prince Kwabena Adu and Kamaldeen Sulemana are also competing to secure their places in Queiroz's plans.

For Wales, the fixture forms part of preparations for the UEFA Nations League, but Bellamy is relishing the challenge posed by an unfamiliar opponent.
