Greater Accra win National Sports Festival

Greater Accra Region emerged as the overall winner at the National Sports Festival which ended in Kumasi yesterday.

The region won most of the indoor games, claiming gold in the men’s and women’s volleyball, taekwondo (men and women) and handball (men and women).

Quartey close to IBF title shot

Ghanaian boxer, Emmanuel Quartey, has been gifted with an opportunity to get a shot at the IBF super-bantamweight title when he faces Welsh Robbie Turley for the Commonwealth super-bantamweight final eliminator at the Ashton Gate Stadium at Bristol in the United Kingdom on October 6.

Quartey, alias Akufo-Addo, is fighting under the promotion of Chris Sanigar of Sanigar Events and is expected to depart from Accra on October 2, together with his trainer Nana Yaw Brifo Addae, cutman Darlington Kojo Yeboah, and manager Danjuma Maama.

Former Black Stars player, Augustine Ahinful, believes Coach Kwasi Appiah deserves more time to rebuild a formidable team for the future.

Norbert Amefu denies involvement in fracas

One of the candidates for the chairmanship of the Greater Accra Taekwondo Association, Master Norbert Amefu, has denied selecting athletes to represent Greater Accra in the ongoing National Sports Festival in Kumasi.

Master Amefu also debunked allegations that he masterminded the chaos which occurred last Saturday and Sunday during the weigh-in at the games village.

Ghana risks IWBF sanctions - Needs US$77,000 for African Championship

The technical handlers of the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation (GWBF) have appealed to the government to, as a matter of urgency, assist the Federation to mobilise resources towards the nation’s participation in the African Wheelchair Basketball Championship slated for South African in November this year.

The Federation has up to September 15 to raise US$77,000, comprising registration fee, camping and allowances for officials and players, to enable the nation to participate in the competition.

Don’t sell Liberty Pros - Wahid appeals to board

A former player of Liberty Professionals, Wahid Mohammed, has made a passionate plea with the current board of the club not to sell it as any attempt to change its owners will kill the dream and legacy of the late founder, Alhaji Sly Tetteh.

According to Mohammed, who once captained Liberty, he was in no doubt that the club were suffering financially from the death six years ago of Sly Tetteh, but he maintains that any plan to get new owners will erode all the plans the late founder had for his club. He thus charged the current board to seek financing from sponsorship to rebuild the club.

Thomas Partey fires Stars revival

Welcome to the Thomas Partey show. Four days after salvaging a point for Ghana’s Black Stars in their 2018 World Cup qualifying game against Congo, Partey emerged hero again yesterday as he led the Stars to a convincing 5-1 win against the Red Devils in the return fixture in Brazzaville.

Rockets beat Togo in Binatone skate soccer

The national skate soccer team, Rolling Rockets, last Saturday won the Binatone International Unity Skate Soccer Cup after beating Togo 5-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In an impressive display, scoring two first half goals and adding three more after the break, the Rockets were ruthless against their Togolese counterparts who scored a consolation goal from a spot kick.

Ghana's 2018 World Cup campaign: We’ve blown it!

Ghana football chief, Kwesi Nyantakyi, believes Ghana’s World Cup hopes have been dealt a heavy blow by the Black Stars inability to beat the Red Devils of Congo, with the Stars having just two points out of a maximum nine and five points off group leaders, Uganda.

Mr Nyanktakyi, who as GFA boss supervised Ghana’s three World Cup appearances in 2006, 2010 and 2014 said he had all but given up hopes of a fourth consecutive campaign in Russia next year. "Our destiny is no longer in our hands," said the distraught GFA president in a post-match interview last Saturday.
