32 tee-off at 11th Genser PGA Championship

The 11th edition of the Genser Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Championship has officially commenced today at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono, Accra, promising thrilling competition over the next four days.  

This year’s event sees 32 golfers, including 24 Ghanaians and eight international players from Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Togo, competing for a share of the GHS 411,000 prize pool.

The Tournament Director Eric Henaku said he was expecting an intense 72 holes of golf ending on Saturday, especially with top African talents participating. 

He stated, “This is the 11th year of our PGA Championship, and we’re looking for a new winner. Everybody is prepared, and we know the best scores will come.”

Henaku added that the tournament structure would see the 32 regular professionals reduced to 24 after the second day, with the remaining players battling it out for the ultimate trophy, the prestigious blue PGA Ghana jacket, and a GH₵65,000 cash prize. The Seniors and Ladies categories also offer GH₵15,000 each to their winners.

Local stars like Kojo Barni, Lucky Ayisah, Vincent Torgah, and Augustine Mannasseh are expected to shine as they aim to reclaim the title from Nigeria’s Sunday Oladape, the defending champion. 

 
Celebrity Golf Club Captain Alex Oppong Baffoe expressed pride in hosting the championship. “It’s a real privilege for us. The course is challenging, especially our greens, which are the fastest in the region. We expect a very hectic competition, and hopefully, the best wins,” he noted.  
 
Henaku said the introduction of Genser Energy as the title sponsor has reinvigorated the tournament.  “Genser coming on board is one of the happiest things that has happened to us as the PGA. We are very thankful and hope this partnership continues for the next 10 years,” he said.
