£5m compensation for sacked van Gaal

Louis van Gaal (LVG) will reportedly pocket a whopping £5 million severance package after being sacked by Manchester United who are set to name Portuguese Jose Mourinho as his replacement.

The Dutchman, who signed a three-year deal worth £18 million in 2014, is set to receive the remainder of his £6 million-a-year salary in full after his sack  yesterday.

Van Gaal, 64,  and leading employment lawyer Paul Gilroy, who works on behalf of the League Manager’s Association, were seen entering United’s Carrington training ground yesterday morning where he discussed the situation with United’s Chief Executive, Ed Woodward and his departure was confirmed.

Meanwhile, Mourinho's appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets with senior United officials today, the same time the club announce Ryan Giggs has followed van Gaal in leaving the club.

With van Gaal and his Dutch staff having been dismissed, Giggs is said to feel he has no option but to follow them out of the Old Trafford door.

United had planned for Giggs to take over from van Gaal when the 64-year-old's contract expires next summer, but the decision to release him a year early has changed that thinking.

United have also made an offer to Ryan Giggs, Van Gaal's assistant, for him to stay at Old Trafford, and Mourinho has agreed there would be a place for the club’s most decorated player on his staff.

Giggs' future at the club is also in doubt, with the Welshman set to leave despite being offered a new coaching role at the club. —The Mirror
