Adorkor’s transfer stirs controversy

There is raging confusion between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) over the failure of former Deputy Director General (Technical) of the NSA, Erasmus Adorkor, to assume duty as the Director of the Winneba Sports College.

The Ministry is at a loss as to why Adorkor is at post at the NSA while his new appointment took effect from July 12.

The Ministry had earlier stated emphatically that in furtherance of a directive from the Flagstaff House, Adorkor and former acting Director General, Alice Attipoe, were to vacate their respective NSA positions effective July 12.

But while Ms Attipoe complied with the directive, the man at the centre of the controversy, Adorkor, insisted on seeking clearance from the newly-appointed Director General of the NSA, Joe Kpengey.

The duo were designated to different positions, with Madam Attipoe heading back to the Civil Service, while Adorkor was transferred to head the National Sports College at Winneba.

Madam Attipoe, according to the ministry, had handed over to her successor.

But three weeks after the changes, Adorkor is still going about his normal duties at post at the NSA in Accra.

“We don’t know why he is still there; you must go and ask him. He was supposed to start work on July 12 at the Winneba Sports College,” the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Michael Frimpong, told the Daily Graphic last Monday in his office in Accra.

Mr Frimpong added, “For us at the Ministry, we have communicated our position to him so go and ask him.”

When contacted, Mr Kpengey confirmed that Adorkor would leave after the Commonwealth Games, adding that it was a verbal directive from erstwhile Deputy Minister, Joseph Yammin.

According to him he disagreed with the verbal directive by Mr Yammin and would, therefore, formally write to the ministry to put it on paper.

Interestingly, the ministry seemed to be overwhelmed in dealing with what can best be described as the Adorkor malaise.

However, Adorkor himself appears unfazed about the development as he directed this reporter to the newly-appointed Director General, Joe Kpengey.

“Kwame, you know something, go and ask the DG, Joe Kpengey,” he instructed when approached on the matter by the Daily Graphic.

With just a day to the Commonwealth Games and two weeks to the ECOWAS Games, such leadership crisis at the epicentre of the nation’s sports administration can only be a shadow of things to come.
