In furtherance to this, a technical committe is to be set up, which would be made up of sports experts from the two countries, to chart a path and modalities for the partnership.

The move came to light when the Colombian Ambassador to Ghana, Claudia Turbay, paid a courtesy call on the Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, at his office in Accra .

She lauded Ghana’s rich soccer history which, she recognised, was akin to her country’s mad craze for the sport.

She said sports should be used as a diplomatic tool to develop a close link between the two nations which could enhance growth and development in other sectors.

The Ambassador noted that majority of Colombians were under the age of 15 which implied that the population was youthful just as that of Ghana which called for programmes to cater for their future.

She disclosed  that, her outfit met with several institutions to galvanise the youth, particularly those from underprivileged sectors, to take interest in sports such as rugby, soccer and swimming.

According to her, Ghana and Colombia shared  similar heritage, origin and ancestory, noting that over four million Colombians were of African origin.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah lauded the initiative by the Colombians and assured that  Ghana would play a major role in realising the initiative with respect to sports development and youth training.

He briefed the ambassador on  projects undertaken by his outfit with respect to sports development which included youth training in sports programmes, and the training of athletes at the National Sports College  at Winneba.
