Ghana’s 2026 World Cup budget lower than FIFA participation grant – Sports Minister
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has disclosed that Ghana’s budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is lower than the participation grant provided by FIFA.
FIFA recently increased its prize money by 50 per cent, confirming that each participating country will receive at least $10.5 million, along with an additional $1.5 million to support preparation costs.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, April 28, the Minister explained that these funds are typically used to cover player per diems, bonuses, accommodation and other operational expenses, excluding costs such as scouting and additional officials’ travel.
He revealed that Ghana’s projected expenditure for the tournament is approximately $12.3 million, noting that this figure could even be reduced.
According to him, the country’s actual spending remains carefully managed and is expected to stay within or below the financial support provided by FIFA.
“FIFA gives every nation that qualifies for the World Cup $10.5 million, and teams that progress beyond the group stage receive more. However, our actual budget for the World Cup is less than that amount,” he said.
“We allocated for $12.3 m and that could even be reduced,” he added.
Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the World Cup, as the Black Stars prepare to compete on the global stage.
As preparations continue, stakeholders are focused on maintaining financial discipline while ensuring the team remains competitive.
