Gold Stars reclaim Premier League summit: Race for survival heats up

Bibiani Gold Stars have stormed back to the top of the Ghana Premier League after 28 matchdays, courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nations FC yesterday.

The win lifted the defending champions above Medeama, who could only draw 1-1 with Bechem United last Friday, allowing Gold Stars to leapfrog their rivals at the summit.

Samuel Atta Kumi, Gold Stars’ lethal marksman, netted his league-leading 12th goal of the campaign to give the hosts the lead at Dun’s Park. Just 30 minutes in, an own goal by Nations defender Asante Boahen doubled the advantage.

Razack Simpson quickly pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Gold Stars’ resolute defence held firm to claim their 12th victory in 14 home games this season — by far the league’s best record.

With six games remaining, Bibiani now sit on 51 points, one ahead of Medeama. The Mauve and Yellow had needed an 89th-minute penalty from Salim Adams to cancel Augustine Okrah’s 70th-minute opener for Bechem United at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, denying them all three points and leaving the top spot vulnerable.

Hearts end home woes

In third, Accra Hearts of Oak brought relief to their fans by ending a five-game home winless streak. Frank Abora Duku scored for the second successive match to secure a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Young Apostles at the Accra Sports Stadium, offering the Phobian faithful a timely Easter boost.

At the other end of the table, Basake Holy Stars, Berekum Chelsea, Heart of Lions, and Swedru All Blacks all claimed vital home wins over Karela United, Aduana FC, Vision FC, and Dreams FC respectively, tightening the battle to avoid the drop.

With Eleven Wonders already relegated and Hohoe United set to follow after their controversial withdrawal, the scrap for survival is now more intense than ever.

Young Apostles occupy the bottom spot on 33 points, but only two points separate 12th-placed Swedru All Blacks, 13th Berekum Chelsea, 14th Vision FC, and 15th Nations FC, all on 35 points.

Even teams slightly clear of the danger zone — Bechem United (11th), Heart of Lions (10th), and Dreams FC (9th) — remain within striking distance on 37 points each, with 18 points still available. Every fixture could prove decisive in determining who survives this season.

Kotoko match postponed

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko’s Easter Monday clash with FC Samartex was abandoned at halftime due to heavy rain at a waterlogged Baba Yara Stadium.

The second half has been rescheduled to continue at 9am today.
