‘Junior Bazooka’ Antwi honours Nkrumah with Independence Day knockout

Rising Ghanaian boxer Joseph “Junior Bazooka” Antwi marked Ghana’s 69th Independence Day emphatically, delivering a first-round knockout victory over Felix Mankattah on a fight card promoted by SEM Promotions.

The bout, staged on the night of March 6 at the Cathedral Clinic in Accra, proved to be more than just another professional contest. Antwi turned the occasion into a tribute to the architect of Ghana’s independence, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, blending sporting triumph with a powerful display of national pride.

For his fourth professional fight, Antwi entered the ring in a symbolic outfit inspired by Ghana’s heritage. He wore a “Pride of Ghana” T-shirt emblazoned with the image of Dr Nkrumah dressed in traditional kente cloth — a striking symbol of Ghanaian culture, leadership and liberation.

The patriotic look was completed with gloves in the colours of the Ghanaian flag and bold white-and-black gladiator-style boxing shorts, sending a clear message: Ghana’s independence was not given — it was earned.

After decades of struggle, resistance and political mobilisation, Ghana in 1957 became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule, a historic achievement that Antwi sought to honour on the anniversary.

Adding to the emotional moment, Antwi made his ring walk to the iconic highlife classic “Ghana – Land of Freedom” by legendary musician E.T. Mensah and His Tempos Band, a song that celebrates the country’s independence and enduring national spirit.

Once the bell rang, the young fighter quickly translated symbolism into action.

Antwi dominated the contest from the opening exchanges before stopping Mankattah with a decisive first-round knockout, sealing an emphatic victory that underlined his growing promise in the professional ranks.

According to his trainer, Kwesi Ofori Asare, the young boxer had shown clear signs of steady progress since turning professional last year.

“Antwi has shown significant improvement since his first professional fight,” Coach Asare observed.

“He continues to grow every day in training, and we are confident that the best is yet to come.”

As Antwi continues to build momentum in his career, moments like this highlight not only his emerging ability in the ring but also his commitment to celebrating Ghana’s history, identity and national pride.

With his fourth professional victory secured, Antwi and his team have already turned their attention to the next challenge, with fans expected to see the exciting youngster back in action later this year as he continues his rise in professional boxing.
