The Federation of International Football (FIFA) has appointed Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi  to mediate in the current football crisis in Kenya.

The crisis, which is worsening after two groups proposed rival premier leagues with conflicting competitions, could cripple the game  and clubs in the East African country.

The Spokesperson of the GFA, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, who confirmed this to the Daily Graphic, said Mr Nyantakyi, who is also a member of the CAF Executive Committee, left Accra on Saturday to Nairobi for a two-day meeting, to facilitate the process to resolve the crisis.

Mr Nyantakyi’s appointment underscores his clout as a football administrator both on the African continent and on the global scene.

It also portrays the vast experience he has gathered over the years among peers in the sport.

“I am a member of the associations committee of FIFA and the Kenyan problem has come before us several times. I have demonstrated immense experience and expertise in addressing the issues that emanate from the football associations and in particular Kenya,” Mr Nyantakyi explained, saying, “My experience may have informed FIFA’s decision to appoint me.”

Currently, the Kenya Premier League (KPL) has 16 teams, and has resisted expansion plans to 18 teams put forward by the national organising body, Football Kenya Football (FKF).

Both groups are organising separate fixtures involving the same teams and the fans fear teams may be forced to choose either league due to competing games and schedules.
