Former Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President and now Development Chief of Ga Mashie, His Royal Highness Nii Kojo Ashifie Papanyira I, has expressed worry over the neglect of other sporting disciplines in the country at the expense of football.
In an exclusive interview with Graphic Sports, Ben Nunoo Mensah, as he is known in private life, lamented how disciplines such as boxing and athletics—which have won more laurels for Ghana than football continue to be sidelined.
"We are not saying government, duty bearers, or leadership should not take care of football. What we are saying is that when you give 100 of what is worth to football, kindly give the 10 that these least-financed sporting disciplines deserve," he stated.
The renowned sports financier and administrator regretted that these so-called least-financed disciplines have become redundant and stale due to chronic neglect.
The development chief also called for a relook at a proposal he made during his tenure as GOC president, which entailed paying stipends to sports personalities who contest for the national cause.
According to him, sports is now a booming business worldwide and a tool for national development, and therefore the government must take keen interest and develop it at all levels.
He further urged duty bearers in sports leadership positions to consult and take guidance from experienced members of the sporting fraternity including the likes of B.T. Baba, Samson Deen, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, and others.
The Development Chief pledged to reward Amadu Mohammed handsomely for bringing honour to Ghana, a promise he fulfilled with the cash presentation.
"I knew you from the beginning and have travelled with you many times. You are such a talent, and I want to laud you for bringing happiness and pride to Ghana," he told the boxer.
Decorating Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah with the medal, Amadu Mohammed thanked the sports financier and vowed to become a better version of himself.
The young pugilist promised to sharpen his craft further and win a world title and gold for Ghana at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. He expressed profound gratitude for the undisclosed cash and vowed to use it wisely to enhance his career.
