Physiotherapy key to sports injuries
The president of the Ghana Physiotherapy Association (GPA), Dr Jonathan Quartey, has urged sportsmen and women to resort to physiotherapy as the first remedy when they sustain an injury.
According to him, physiotherapy is the best medical remedy for sports injuries, explaining that “physiotherapists are experts in developing and maintaining people’s ability to move and function throughout their lives.
Addressing a group of physiotherapists and health workers at the Central Regional Teaching Hospital in Cape Coast to mark ‘World Physiotherapy Day’ on Monday, Dr. Quartey, who is also the physiotherapist for the national U-20 side, the Black Satellites, cautioned that society must not overlook the vital role the profession played in the health and physical well- being of the individual.
“Physiotherapy, as a physical activity, can help prevent all diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes,” he added.
Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, a researcher and physiotherapist, entreated sportsmen and women to apply all facets of physiotherapy in treating various sports injuries.
According to him, a physiotherapist’s work becomes more effective to post-general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology, cardio respiratory medicine and orthopaedics.
