From that point on, she steadily rose through the ranks, officiating top-level matches in football, Futsal, and beach soccer. Her assignments have included high-profile encounters featuring some of the country’s best women’s teams and national-level competitions.
Balancing her numerous sporting roles has not been without challenges. Portia admits;
“It has not been easy combining football, Futsal, and beach soccer, alongside military duties, but I always sail through because of the passion I have for these activities," Portia Oppong said.
Her ability to juggle playing, officiating, and military responsibilities speaks to her discipline and love for sports.
Her achievements as a referee reached a historic milestone when she became the first female FIFA Beach Soccer referee in Ghana.
“I feel so excited, especially being the first female FIFA Beach Soccer referee in the history of Ghana. It is top-notch for me! My dream to rise through the ranks of refereeing has come true," she added.
The recognition at an international level is not only a personal triumph but also a beacon of inspiration for aspiring female referees in the country. Before her refereeing career, Portia was also a talented footballer.
She played for her school team from basic to senior high school, representing her district and even reaching the regional level. However, her growing prominence in table tennis eventually led her to focus on the sport, where she represented the Eastern Region during her schooling years.
Portia is quick to acknowledge the people who supported her along the way.
“First, I thank God Almighty. I also thank my mother and siblings for believing in my dreams. I am grateful to my district association referees in Akyem Oda, the executives of the Ghana Football Association, Beach Soccer officials, and my military superiors, who have all provided opportunities and guidance throughout my journey.”
“I am also grateful to Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, former Beach Soccer President and now Director General for National Sports Authority, for giving me the opportunity to join Beach Soccer from the very first day he saw me in Accra in 2018.”
She continues to inspire young athletes and referees alike, proving that with dedication, one can excel in multiple sporting arenas while making history along the way.
