Prudential Bank staff hit streets for health, team spirit
Dozens of Prudential Bank staff laced up their trainers for a spirited two-hour health walk through some of the city’s busiest streets last Saturday morning, sending a powerful message about wellness, teamwork and the importance of healthy lifestyles.
Gathering as early as 7 a.m. at the bank’s head office in Kanda, the staff—decked out in branded Prudential Bank T-shirts emblazoned with bold slogans such as “Do it your way” and “Manage your money anytime, anywhere”—hit the Ring Road East at 7:57 a.m. sharp.
The route took them through Hilla Limann Highway to the Nima Traffic Light, then along Patrice Lumumba Street at the Airport Residential Area, before heading through Liberation Road and 37, back to base.
Once back, participants threw themselves into an aerobics and fitness session, capping off the day with stretches, sweat and plenty of smiles.
For Prudential Bank, however, this was no one-off. The Head of Human Resources, Lilian Antwiwaa Asante, revealed that the health walk was part of a broader drive to instil lasting habits among staff.
“Many people see health events as a one-day affair, but we want to shift that mindset,” she explained. “This is about creating a culture of wellness that goes beyond the office.”
Health initiatives
The bank has already been building momentum. In June, all staff underwent mandatory health checks, followed by a three-month virtual step challenge from July to September.
Teams of eight aimed to collectively ‘walk’ the distance from Accra to Tamale—an ambitious 3,700 kilometres.
Some smashed the target in just a month, while others took a little longer, but the message was clear: movement matters. Employees tracked progress via a mobile app with daily 10,000-step goals and hydration reminders.
“We’re hoping employees will continue these habits beyond the event because health is a journey,” Ms Asante said. She also hinted at expanding the initiative into an annual programme that could involve other banks and the wider community: “The future is fluid, and we are agile. Who knows what next year will bring?”
For Executive Head of Corporate and Institutional Banking, Edward Commey, the event was as much about bonding as it was about burning calories.
“This initiative is more than just a physical activity; it reflects our commitment to healthy minds and bodies,” he noted, adding that teamwork was central to Prudential Bank’s ethos. He confirmed plans to replicate similar events across branches nationwide.
