Queens host Zimbabwe ; In All Africa Games qualifier

Queens host Zimbabwe ; In All Africa Games qualifier

Ghana's senior female football, the Black Queens have their eyes set on a comprehensive win as they host Zimbabwe in the first leg of their All Africa Games qualifier.

Tomorrow at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Queens, eager to bounce back from their 2014 African Women’s Championship disappointment, will leave nothing to chance when they face a dicey challenge from the Southern Africans who have also landed in Accra to ‘muddy the waters’ for their hosts.

With no international assignment for the Queens this year, having missed the 2015 Women’s World Cup opportunity, the AAG is the team only chance to  get busy and they intend to hold on to it by qualifying for the Games in Congo in September.

Head Coach, Yussif Basigi, says the Queens are aware of the challenge the Zimbabwe pose, given that they were the second strongest team from down south, after South Africa, and have prepared adequately for the challenge.

“Unlike South Africa, we have hardly played against Zimbabwe, but we know they are a good side. Playing the first leg away, they would want to get a good result so they can build on when they host the second leg.

“We also want a very good result so that there will be no undue pressure when we travel to Harare in two weeks, we will score as many goals as we can when the chances fall our way,” Coach Basigi said.

With very little chances to his team, except the inclusion of some faces from the Under-20 side, Coach Basigi is hopeful the experience of the players and their exposure in such qualifiers at the world level will help them realise their dream.

No doubt, the experience of defender Rosemary Ampem, Edem Atovor, as well as the fine form of Linda Eshun and Agnes Aduako will be good news for the Queens who are counting on a good measure of support from the fans given that the gates will open for free.

The Zimbabweans arrived in town last night, brimming with confidence and a plan to scupper Ghana’s dream.
