See the conditions of Thomas Partey's bail after he appeared in court today

Ghanaian international and former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The 32-year-old, whose contract with Arsenal expired just days ago, stood in the dock with his arms behind his back as the charges, linked to alleged offences committed between 2021 and 2022, were read out during a 15-minute hearing. Partey spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address before being released on bail.

Under the conditions of his bail, Partey is prohibited from contacting any of the three women who have brought allegations against him. He is also required to notify police of any permanent changes to his address or international travel plans. His next court appearance is scheduled for 10am on Tuesday, September 2 at the Old Bailey.

During proceedings, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring acknowledged Partey’s relocation, stating: “I understand he’s no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.” Partey simply responded, "Thank you," upon being informed he was free to leave the court.

The bail hearing coincides with reports that Partey has agreed to join Spanish La Liga side Villarreal. The Athletic revealed that the midfielder, who completed a medical over the weekend, is expected to sign a two-year deal. His decision to join Villarreal was reportedly influenced by the opportunity to continue playing Champions League football.

Partey was a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad during the 2024/25 season, making 52 appearances across all competitions. Prior to joining the Gunners, he had stints with Atlético Madrid, Mallorca, and Almería. Reports suggest he also received offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Villarreal are set to face Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, marking a possible early return for Partey against his former club.

His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has stated that he “denies all the charges against him.”
