Sports Minister urges strong governance as NSA board begins strategic retreat

The Governing Board of the National Sports Authority has commenced a three-day out-of-office retreat in Ada, signalling the start of a strategic process aimed at repositioning the Authority through renewed focus on governance, education and purposeful leadership.

The retreat, which brings together board members, management and key stakeholders, is designed to generate practical solutions to the day-to-day execution of the Authority’s mandate, with the broader objective of transforming the social and public image of the National Sports Authority. Organisers say the setting is intended to allow for deep and uninterrupted strategic thinking that is often difficult to achieve during routine, time constrained meetings.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, was the guest of honour at the opening session. In his address, the Minister underscored the importance of the Sports Fund, which he inaugurated only days earlier, describing it as a sustainable means to support sports development and Ghana’s sports promotion agenda.

Kofi Adams highlighted a packed calendar of major international and continental events scheduled for 2026, including Ghana’s participation in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the hosting of the African Wrestling Championship, the beach soccer international championship, preparations towards Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup and the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He stressed the need for sound planning and efficient resource management to ensure Ghana’s readiness across these competitions.

The Minister commended the Board and management of the National Sports Authority for initiating what he described as a timely and strategic retreat, noting that it was expected to refresh the minds of stakeholders on good governance and prudent public service management procedures at a critical moment for Ghanaian sport.

The retreat is being chaired by the Board Chairman, Dr Fred Awaah, and is attended by members of the Governing Board, including the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, his deputies Gideon Hammond and Veronica Commey, as well as the Chief Operating Officer, Yaw Kusi Gyamfi.

Also participating are representatives from key institutions linked to sports development, including Fuseini Bawa of the National Sports College, Samuel Duku Sarfo of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Nana Adwoa Owusu Amoh from the Ministry of Finance, Is Haku Al Hassan from the Ministry of Education, Col Richard Kofi Akoto of the Security Services Sports Association and Dr Luguterah Austin Wontepaga representing tertiary institutions. Distinguished sports personalities and development experts such as Hajia Sulemana Zenabu, Alhaji Iddris Muntawakilu Ahmed, Prof Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Theresa Osahene, Hamilton Kweku Nixon and Charles Amofa, Head of Public Relations, are also in attendance.

The Governing Board, which was sworn in a little over a month ago by Kofi Adams, has been tasked to pursue bold reforms and deliver performance driven leadership across Ghana’s sports sector.

The Board is expected to steer the Authority through a period of reforms aimed at restoring confidence, strengthening governance structures and repositioning the National Sports Authority as a performance based institution capable of delivering results in a rapidly evolving global sports industry.
