Tragedy hits Universities Games as athlete falls and dies

Tragedy hit the ongoing Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games going on at the University of Cape Coast when one of its sportsmen fell on the field and died in a game of handball.

Abdul Fataaw Seidu, a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University was in a game with the University of Ghana when he suddenly fell. Medical officials at the games made efforts to revive him but all to no avail.

According to the President of GUSA, Dr Joesph Kwesi Ogah, the family was immediately contacted and arrangements made to get Seidu buried at Pokuase in the Greater Accra region on Friday in accordanc with Moslem tradition.

The incident cast a gloomy blanket on the games on Saturday evening.

Dr Ogah said a proposal would be made to the Executive Committee of the games to consider naming the trophy at stake in the handball competition after Seidu.

Participants who saw him indicated that there was no indication he was sick.

The games which run from the 11th to 22nd June, would have the various public universities engage each other in a variety of disciplines.
