Trustees win hockey league

Police missed out on the Dwadifo Adanfo Hockey League title despite registering a 3-1 victory over Exchequers, after arch-rivals Trustees beat Reformers 6-2 last Wednesday to make their goal difference unassailable.

Police needed to win by a 10-goal margin against Exchequers last Saturday at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium to unseat the eventual champions, Trustees.

A high tempo start by Police was rewarded as early as the second minute when Richard Adjei broke loose down the right and crossed for Samuel Tetteh to snatch the lead.

Tetteh doubled the tally in the 17th minute after he stretched to tap home, and completed his hat-trick in the 24th minute when he capitalised on a poor clearance from Exchequers goalie, Dankyi Daniel, to make it 3-0.

The game was halted for 15 minutes for the floodlights to be switched, thus slowing down the tempo of Police when the game resumed.

Exchequers tightened their defence after the break and frustrated the dominant Police attack for a better part of the second half before pulling a goal back in the 70th minute through Evans Sadare.

After the game, Police’s Sam Benedict who emerged top-scorer of the league with 10 goals, attributed his side’s inability to score more goals to poor officiating by the umpires.

“The umpire was a former Trustees player and most of his calls were aimed at slowing our tempo and I believe it worked to perfection”.
