World Relays: Ministry did not alter travel schedule submitted by Ghana Athletics Association
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has clarified that it did not vary or alter the travel schedule for Ghana's men's 4x100m relay team to the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, as submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA).
In a statement issued on May 4 by the Head of PR and Communication for the Ministry Bagbara Tanko, the Ministry responded to recent public comments by members of the relay team, as well as a statement issued by the GAA, regarding travel and preparation arrangements for the competition.
Background
The clarification follows strong criticism from sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, a member of Ghana's men's 4x100m relay team, who publicly criticised the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over poor travel arrangements.
Despite the team securing qualification for the next World Athletics Championships, Saminu expressed frustration over what he described as inadequate preparation conditions, including late arrival in Botswana, which left little time for acclimatisation, practice, and rest ahead of the prestigious competition.
The Ghana Athletics Association had also issued a statement raising concerns about the travel arrangements, suggesting possible interference or delays from the Ministry.
Ministry's response
The Ministry stated that arrival timelines and competition preparation schedules are determined by federation engagements and international competition protocols, and not by the Ministry.
"The role of the Ministry, upon receipt of recommendations from the National Sports Authority and the relevant federation, is to facilitate the procurement of travel arrangements in line with the approved schedule," the statement read.
"With specific reference to the World Athletics Relays, the Ministry did not vary or alter the travel schedule as submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association."
Commendation for the team
The Ministry commended the team for their performance and qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships and wished them continued success.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting all national teams within established procedures and will continue to work with the National Sports Authority and federations to strengthen coordination and ensure optimal preparation conditions for athletes.
