Asogli & partners to add 1,560MW to national grid

Ghana’s energy sector is to receive a major boost as agreements for the generation of 1,200 Megawatts of power and the expansion of the Sunon Asogli Power Plant to add a further 360MW have been signed.

The total of 1,560MW shared between Sunon Asogli – 700MW coal-fired power plant plus a further 360MW when its current plant is expanded, would be completed with a 500MW package by China Hunan Energy of Shenzhen Energy Group.

Tge 500MW capacity plant would be sited at the Domlemi power enclave in the Jomoro District of the Western Region.
 
The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah on Friday signed the deal in China on behalf of the government and people of Ghana while president of Shenzhen Energy Group, Mr Hong Cao, signed for his group.
 
The deal will see the establishment of the country’s first coal-fired power plant at a cost of about $1.4bn including port facilities for coal supplies from South Africa.

The expansion of the Sunon Asogli Plant, which is currently producing 220MW, will bring the plant’s capacity to 580MW as planned initially.

The projects which would be completed over 18 months, starts immediately with the expansion work on the Sunon Asogli plant.
