Electrical contractors asked to use quality products

Members of the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) have been advised to patronise quality made-in-Ghana cables for their wiring projects instead of relying on imported inferior products to undertake their housing wiring contracts.

This is because the inferior ones can easily cause fire outbreaks once they heat up. They have also been urged to acquire certificates from the Energy Commission in order not to face prosecution when they are caught executing projects without a certified permit from the commission.

The Head of Production of Reroy Cables Ltd, Mr Rockson S. Nkansah, gave the advice at a nationwide sensitisation seminar organised for members of GECA in Takoradi in the Western Region at the weekend on the best industrial practice for all certified electricians.

Theme/purpose

The theme for the campaign is ‘‘Buy Ghana, Build Ghana, Creating Market for Local Industry.’’

The purpose of the exercise across the country is to improve on the company’s brand awareness to let people know the quality products on the market and also to champion the Made-in-Ghana campaign.

‘‘Try and buy products that meet international standards and avoid cutting down cost by going in for cheap and inferior cable products from China and elsewhere, compared with quality made-in-Ghana cables,’’Mr Nkansah said.

International Electrical Commission

Reroy products are produced according to the standards of the International Electrical Commission and enforced by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

He further encouraged all electricians who had not yet been certified by the commission to take the bold initiative to write the certification examination which would then provide them the required recognition to attract jobs.

The Chief Commercial Officer of the company, Mr Mark Kennedy Asamoah, noted that for the next five to 10 years, there was a bigger opportunity for the energy sector, since the government was going to supply power to neighbouring countries, saying ‘‘so try and take advantage of such an opportunity.’’

‘‘Let us all benefit from our own products made locally instead of those inferior ones from the Far East. We want to partner you to provide quality to our people and avoid the intermittent fire outbreaks in various parts of the country,” Mr Asamoah assured.
