GNPC launches ECO Club with tree planting exercise in Tema

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reinforced its commitment to sustainability with a tree planting exercise and the launch of its ECO Club at Aggrey Road 2 Junior High School in Tema.

The initiative, held alongside St. John Bosco R/C School, forms part of the Corporation’s flagship ECO Motion Campaign aimed at promoting environmental stewardship among the youth.

Mrs Joana A.P. Mensah, Headmistress of Aggrey Road 2 JHS, lauded the initiative, describing it as both timely and transformative.

“This project is a major boost to our existing school garden initiative. Beyond beautifying our campus, it teaches our students responsibility, care for the environment, and the importance of sustainability,” she said.

The launch featured an interactive session led by Miss Nina Antwi-Yeboah of GNPC’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Department. She reminded students that planting was only the first step, stressing the importance of consistent care. “Tree planting is just the beginning. True environmental change comes when we learn to care for what we plant. I commend St. John Bosco School for maintaining the trees we planted last year and encourage Aggrey Road 2’s ECO Club members to follow that example,” she noted.

GNPC’s Manager of Corporate Communication, Mr Famous Kofi Ayivor, highlighted the long-term vision behind the ECO Clubs. “The GNPC ECO Clubs are not symbolic – they are practical steps towards grooming the next generation of environmental stewards. We will continue to visit these clubs, share care tips, and monitor the growth of the trees while also investing in the academic and personal development of the students,” he said.

In recognition of their dedication to environmental education, Mr Frank Teye and Madam Beauty Korkor Akotia were commended for their roles as patrons of the schools’ environmental clubs.

The GNPC ECO Motion Campaign reflects the Corporation’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility, climate action, and sustainability, with the motto “Green Today, Greener Tomorrow.”
