
Price of tomatoes rises as supply declines
The price of tomatoes rose by four per cent in the second week of January, mainly as a result of the lean nature of supply across the country.
The price rose to GH¢11.68 per ‘medium size tomato tin’, giving retailers of the vegetable some glimpses of hope, going forward
Another commodity, which also recorded a rise in price was Yam (Pona). A medium size of a yam tuber was sold at GH¢4.50.
Cowpea, Groundnut and Soya beans also followed with a percentage point gain each to close the week at GH¢7.70, 12.90 and GH¢5.60 per olonka respectively.
Checks by Esoko Ghana revealed that Cassava (fresh tubers) dropped by a two percent to close the week at GH¢5.30 per ‘3-4 tubers.’
Cassava (Gari) and Rice (imported –unclesam) also dropped by a percentage point each to close the week at GH¢4.50 and GH¢28.90 per “olonka” and“1 small bag (5kg)” respectively.
The price for an ‘olonka’ of maize on the various markets remained the same.
A ‘medium size tomato tin’ full of fresh tomatoes gained 17 per cent in Kumasi to close the week at GH¢8.9, with Techiman gaining five per cent to close at GH¢7. In Takoradi, the crop gained nine per cent to close the week at GH¢21.6. It lost three per centage points in Accra to close the week at GHS 19.80.
