Telecel Ghana Foundation donates to female inmates at Akuse Prisons, offers free health screening

Telecel Ghana Foundation has extended its annual CARE Month celebrations to the Akuse Female Prison in the Eastern Region, donating essential supplies and organising a free breast cancer screening exercise for inmates and officers.

The outreach, held under the company’s theme of care and compassion, aimed to promote the wellbeing and inclusion of women in correctional facilities who are often overlooked in public health initiatives.

Employees of Telecel Ghana contributed personal care items including sanitary pads, soaps, toiletries, and disinfectants, which were presented to the female inmates by a team led by the company’s General Manager of Commercial Operations, Mercy Dawn Akude.

“As part of our CARE Month celebrations, we are reaching out to the female inmates, who are often overlooked, to donate these essential items and provide free breast cancer screening as their health matters,” Ms Akude said.

The breast screening exercise was conducted in partnership with medical professionals from the Ridge Medical Centre, who also provided education on breast health, wellness, and early detection of cancer. The medical team took inmates through practical demonstrations and counselling sessions aimed at encouraging regular self-examination and prompt medical checks.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Akuse Female Prison, ADP Beatrice Asiedu, expressed gratitude to Telecel Ghana Foundation and its partners for the thoughtful gesture. “This kind and thoughtful gesture means a lot to the inmates and officers. It makes us feel remembered, valued, and genuinely cared for,” she said.

The Akuse Female Prison, established in the 1990s as a small extension of the Akuse Local Prison, was originally designed to house five inmates but now accommodates over twenty. The facility operates several rehabilitation programmes including baking, sewing, and vocational training to help reform inmates and prepare them for reintegration into society.

Telecel Ghana’s initiative at the prison formed part of its broader CARE Month activities, which extend the global Customer Service Week into a full month of community engagement, customer appreciation, and digital education. The 2025 celebration, themed “Mission: Possible,” has included outreach projects, staff volunteerism, and events celebrating customers and frontline workers.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility through acts of kindness and service aimed at improving lives across communities.
