Police rescue trafficked Nigerian teenager from sexual exploitation in Tarkwa

The Western Central Regional branch of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has rescued a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was trafficked from Enugu State in Nigeria to Tarkwa for sexual exploitation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday [November 5, 2025], the police said the operation in Tarkwa followed a report from the victim’s father, Onuigo Onuigbo, who declared his daughter missing in October 2025.

The man later received a distress call from the girl on October 24, 2025, revealing that she had been trafficked and was being held in Tarkwa in Ghana.

Investigations led to the arrest of a 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna at Aboso near Tarkwa.

Another suspect, Golden Blessing, who is believed to have deceived the teenager with a promise of a cleaning job in Lagos before handing her over to Ogbonna, is currently on the run and believed to be hiding in Nigeria.

According to the police, Ogbonna allegedly confined the girl in a room in Tarkwa and forced her into prostitution.

A concerned neighbour helped her contact her father, which led to her rescue.

Medical tests have confirmed that the girl is pregnant. The police said Ogbonna remains in custody and will be put before court, while efforts continue to apprehend her accomplice.

The Western Central Regional Police Command commended members of the public for their vigilance and assistance in rescuing the victim.

In the statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Beatrice Turkson, the police reaffirmed commitment to arrest the accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is believed to be in Nigeria.
