GCAA probes alleged mistreatment of Accra bound KLM passengers in Amsterdam

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has begun investigations into allegations of mistreatment of passengers aboard KLM Flight KL059 after videos showing stranded travellers at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport circulated on social media.

The flight, which was scheduled to depart for Accra on Saturday, June 27, 2026, was delayed for several hours, leaving passengers stranded at the airport.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 28, 2026, the GCAA said it had taken note of videos showing passengers expressing dissatisfaction with their treatment by the Dutch airline during what it described as a tarmac delay.

“The GCAA has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported tarmac delay and the alleged mistreatment of some passengers,” the Authority said.

The incident occurred during a period of operational disruptions at Schiphol Airport. Reports indicate that Amsterdam Airport recorded hundreds of delays and several cancellations on June 27, 2026, affecting a number of airlines.

According to the GCAA, the investigation will not only examine the delay itself but also concerns raised by passengers over the manner in which they were handled during the disruption.

The Authority said it was acting in line with its consumer protection mandate and would engage all relevant stakeholders before communicating the outcome of the investigation.

“With safety, security, and consumer protection as our top priorities,” the statement said, “the Authority will engage all relevant stakeholders and communicate the outcome in accordance with established regulatory procedures.”

The investigation is also expected to consider KLM’s obligations under European Union Regulation EC 261/2004, which requires airlines operating from airports within the European Union to provide passengers with care and assistance, including meals, refreshments and accommodation where necessary, when flights are delayed for extended periods or cancelled.

Whether those obligations were fully met for passengers on Flight KL059 remains under investigation.

KLM has operated flights between Amsterdam and Accra for many years and serves passengers travelling between Ghana, Europe and North America.

The Authority said it remained committed to safeguarding passenger welfare and maintaining high service standards within the aviation sector.
