Velho Carbons champions sustainable water management in agriculture

Velho Carbons Ltd., a Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC)-supported business, is leading efforts to improve sustainable water purification for agriculture in Ghana.

As the world marked World Water Day on March 22, the company reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring farmers have access to clean irrigation water, a critical component of food security and environmental sustainability.

Through support from KIC and the Mastercard Foundation, Velho Carbons Ltd. has developed innovative filtration systems that repurpose organic waste—primarily coconut husks—into high-quality activated carbon.

This eco-friendly solution helps remove impurities, contaminants, and toxins from water sources, promoting healthier crops and more sustainable farming practices.

“At Velho Carbons Ltd., the mission is clear: to empower farmers, agribusinesses, and communities with access to clean water for irrigation, ensuring food security and environmental preservation,” said Dr Erastus Mak-Mensah, Co-Founder of Velho Carbons Ltd.

The Executive Director of KIC, Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, emphasised the importance of investing in sustainable practices within the agricultural sector.

“Kosmos Innovation Center is committed to creating a sustainable future by empowering youth start-ups and promoting agribusiness innovation in line with its purpose of Powering Innovation, Transforming Communities, and Impacting Lives,” he stated.

Velho Carbons Ltd. continues to advocate for responsible water use while equipping farmers with the necessary tools to adapt to climate change.

“Sustainable water management is not just about conservation—it’s about securing the future of agriculture, empowering communities, and building climate resilience,” the company said in a statement.
