As part of the Discop arrangement, there was a series pitching competition at which hundreds of entries were invited. Abiba, a drama series, was selected as one of eight semi-finalists and  it came out second in the final round.

According to Kwame Boadi, the Producer of Abiba, which currently screens on GTV and Vox Africa in the UK, although it came second, it was also judged as the production with the least cost.

The other eight semi-finalist producers  included four Kenyan, one Brazilian, one Angolan, and one South African.

The semi-final entailed a two minute pitch, following which the judges and audience cast their vote. Four entries were chosen for the final and Abiba, was voted second for its originality, potential for longevity, and business prospects.

For coming second, Abiba received an amount of $1,500 and a commitment from Discop to help in its development and production, including co-production  and distribution deals.

In addition, the producers of Abiba will be given a special table at Discop 2014 to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, South Africa.

Mr Boadi who also produced Sun City says he is in the process of selecting a strategic co-producer who would be a perfect fit to enable Abiba become a global brand.

“The time is ripe for the massive export of TV and film content, out of Ghana. All we have to do is to form strategic alliances among ourselves together with foreign entities who have strategic reach and technical know- how.”

Kwame has dedicated the award to certain personalities including Wallace Bampoe Addo, Emmanuel Apea Junior, Ivan Quashigah, Abdulai Awudu, Shirley Frimpong Manso, Mike Amon Kwafo, and all those who continue to push the boundaries in the television industry in Ghana.
