Theatre lovers in the nation’s capital  would from Friday, September 5 to Saturday, October 4, experience the works of various drama, dance and music groups , including the visual arts, under one roof.

“There will be  something for everyone regardless of preference including 21 drama and dance productions, four concerts, two children’s variety shows, high school drama competition, a film show, visual art exhibition, a book fair and creative arts workshops,” said the Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mrs Amy Frimpong at the launch of the festival last Tuesday.

Guests at the launch were given a taste of some of the events slated for the festival. Groups such as the National Drama Company, National Dance Company and the National Symphony Orchestra performed excerpts from some of their known works.

“With the National Theatre’s mission to develop and promote the performing arts in Ghana, this celebration is long overdue,” Mrs Frimpong said.

Plays by writers such as Latif Batalima, Nii Commey, Sackey Sowah, Ebo Whyte, Efo Kodjo Mawugbe, Prof Martin Owusu, Prof Nii Yartey, Gloria Yartey  and Saka Acquaye will be performed by groups including Roverman Productions, Theatre Mirrors,  Kokromoti, Abibigromma, Asembi Productions, Vision Theatre and Kozikozi.

The music component of the festival will embrace activities such as a concert by Bernard Amankwah, an Amu Choral Concert and a competition by bands from the security services.

The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Gomashie said at the launch that the festival should be a useful forum for experienced folks in the creative arts sector to pass on knowledge to upcoming practitioners.

“We must groom young ones to take over. Otherwise we would be celebrated  and when we are gone, there would be nobody to  carry  the torch. We must start now,” the Deputy Minister said.

There will be a production at 3.00pm and 7.00pm each day in  the main auditorium of the National Theatre during the festival period.
