Romance, what a name!

Patrons who made it to the National Theatre last Friday laughed their hearts out scene after scene with the hilarious family stage play, My Name Is Romance, written and directed by Nii Commey.

The play was not only to entertain patrons but was also a fundraising event  to support  SOS Children’s Villages across the country to fight malnutrition among underprivileged children.

My Name Is Romance tells the story of Famiye, a young man who is preparing to marry his sweetheart, Kuukua, a lawyer. Meanwhile, his past comes haunting him as his ex-girlfriend, Ewurama, appears from nowhere.

Ewurama introduces herself to Kuukua as Famiye’s cousin who resides in the USA and makes life very uncomfortable for Famiye who probably wishes that the earth would open up and swallow him. His fear is that Ewurama might tell Kuukua the whole truth about their love affair.

When Ewurama eventually spills the beans at a birthday dinner organised for her by Kuukua, Famiye’s world comes tumbling down but will that be the end of his relationship with Kuukua?

Then there is Adoley the illiterate who has been impregnated by Famiye. Her uncle brings her to Famiye’s house to stay but Famiye pleads with them to leave, telling them that he would come over and see them later to sort them out. At the end of the day, Adoley delivers and brings the baby to Famiye and Kuukua gladly accepts the baby.

Kuukua proves that she really loves her man because after all the wahala involving Ewurama and Adoley, she still forgives Famiye and accepts him back though she leaves him for a short while.

My Name Is Romance is indeed hilarious and the director succeeds in getting the audience laughing from start to finish. There was however a major problem with sound, it was really bad because there were times one could not hear anything at all, tried as the cast did to project, the microphones failed on the night.

Acting was generally good with my personal favourite and probably the favourite of the audience being Obodai, he handled his role very well.
