Dilemma of a Ghost brings cultural tensions to life

THE National Theatre in Accra hosted a captivating production of Ama Ata Aidoo's thought-provoking play, Dilemma of a Ghost from Friday, June 6 to Sunday, June 8.

Playwright and director, Fiifi Coleman and his Fiifi Coleman Production team creatively brought the story to life, exploring themes of cultural identity, tradition and relationships.

The play tells the story of Ato Yawson, a Ghanaian student who returns home from studying abroad with his African-American wife, Eulalie. The story delves into the challenges they face as they navigate their cultural differences, particularly Eulalia's struggles to adapt to traditional Ghanaian ways.

Knowing that typical Ghanaian families would expect a baby a few months after marriage, Ato presses on his African-American wife to hold on to childbirth for some years to provide them with the opportunity to enjoy themselves.

However, his family charges on their daughter-in-law for being the cause of their ‘childlessness’. Ato’s family move to his house with herbs to make Eulalie fertile and boost her chances of getting pregnant.

Ato rejects the offer, explaining to his family that his wife is not barren and that not having children is a joint decision they have made and they will start a family when they are ready.

This, among many other cultural differences, builds tension between Eulelia and her husband's family.

The production features a talented cast, veteran actors David Dontoh and Fred Amugi and others such as Roselyn Ngissah, and Adjetey Annang, who showcased their exceptional acting skills, bringing depth and meaning to their characters.

Ato's family, particularly his mother and grandmother, were portrayed with such authenticity that it felt like watching real-life Ghanaian Fante matriarchs. The chemistry between the leads was palpable, and their struggles to reconcile their cultural differences were both heart-wrenching and relatable.

Also, the play's exploration of cultural identity and traditions reflected deeply with the dominant Ghanaian audience. The production highlighted the complexities of intercultural marriage and the challenges of going through different cultural norms and values within a family.

The set design and costumes were also noteworthy, effectively capturing the essence of the Ghanaian village setting. The incorporation of traditional music and dance added to the overall ambience, transporting the audience to the world of the play.

Dilemma of a Ghost is a good exploration of the human experience, delving into themes that are still relevant today.
