EDITOR’S LENS: Tourists find accommodation too expensive in GH
GHANA’S tourism sector is witnessing significant growth, but a recent survey has highlighted pressing issues that must be addressed.
The 2024 Ghana Tourism Report recently launched by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) indicates that 37 per cent of tourists found accommodation in the country expensive, and the same percentage expressed dissatisfaction with high visa fees.
These findings are a wake-up call to tourism industry stakeholders to take a closer look at costs and enhance the overall visitor experience.
On a more positive note, Ghana welcomed over 1.28 million international tourists in 2024, marking a 12 per cent increase from the previous year, and generated approximately $4.8 billion in revenue, signalling a robust recovery after the COVID-19 slow down.
The report reveals that 94 per cent of visitors were attracted by Ghana's hospitality, and 88 per cent appreciated the country’s safety, cultural heritage and local cuisine which are crucial factors in their travel decisions.
However, the expensive accommodation charges and visa fees pose a significant challenge that needs to be addressed. During peak seasons, tourists face high expenditures on lodging, food and entertainment, raising concerns about whether Ghana may be pricing itself out of the market. It is vital for the GTA to collaborate with industry partners to address these concerns.
One potential solution could be the promotion of budget-friendly accommodation options such as guesthouses and affordable hotels.
Additionally, the overall visitor experience at popular tourist sites is crucial. While the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park remains the most visited attraction, drawing 20 per cent of tourist visits, events like the Kwahu Easter Festival received mixed reviews, with only 27.5 per cent of attendees expressing satisfaction. This indicates a pressing need for improved service delivery and event quality.
In conclusion, while Ghana's tourism sector shows promising growth, addressing these concerns is essential for maintaining competitiveness.
By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the GTA can work towards making Ghana an affordable and enjoyable destination, ultimately driving growth and revenue for the tourism industry.
