The well-staged dance drama production tells a story about juvenile delinquency resulting from lack of proper parental control, neglect and abuse.
Bukom, in essence, denounces social vices like robbery, prostitution, streetism, drug abuse, murder and truancy.
The Ghana Dance Ensemble, true to form, executed the likeable work choreographed by Prof. Nii Yartey as if their very lives depended on it.
Before the company came up with the dance drama, they teased the audience with some selected traditional dances including Atsea from Volta Region and Jira from the northern part of the country.
The professionalism of the company was evident in the smooth transition from one dance to the other and their movements fascinated the audience.
As Mrs Amy Frimpong, the emcee for the night, announced the commencement of the dance drama, the set design produced by David Amoo, a former director of the company, drew thunderous applause from the crowd.
In telling the story, the choreographer compelled the performers to use their lithe bodies in rhythm with the well-arranged drum music to hypnotise the audience.
The ensemble of well-orchestrated body movements managed to capture the routine of daily life in Bukom, a suburb of Accra.
The incorporation of Kpanlogo, a Ga recreational dance, greatly enhanced the atmosphere of the production.
So electrifying was the performance that the audience simply appreciated the glorious talent that was presented on stage.
All in all, the Bukom presented on stage at the National Theatre on March 14 and March 15 was a glorious spectacle which had the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, also in the audience.
The production was directed by Nii Tete-Yartey, the Director of the Ghana Dance Ensemble.
It was presented through a collaborative effort with the National Theatre of Ghana.
