Ghana's DJ Champagne is back to his roots

WHEN the applause was loudest, DJ Champagne who raised the flag of Ghana high at the 2012 Big Brother Africa(BBA) during the closing ceremony of that year’s show “walked off” Ghana’s music scene to seek greener pastures in South Africa.

But after almost a decade, DJ Champagne, an old student of Labone Secondary School is back to pick up from where he left off. He gave a hint of his comeback through a Facebook post last month.

Today, DJ Champagne, real name James Opoku is the host of Ghana in the Mix on BE100 World Hit Radio, a mainstream internet radio station that features some of the most diverse multicultural content in the industry.

Started by Debra Antney and Waka Flocka, BE100 is a global marketing brand which currently has listeners in over 79 countries.

According to DJ Champagne whose 30 minutes programme airs every Friday from 4:30pm-5:00pm, the platform will give him the chance to promote Ghana’s music to the world.

“It’s been a very long break for me in Ghana and I’m more than excited to be back. More importantly is the fact that I have the means to sell Ghana’s music and that gives me a sense of contentment.

“I know the terrain has changed but I have also been learning new things whiles away and the feedback from my first show has been encouraging.

"It shows that people still believe in my craft and I don’t have any option than to meet their set mark for me,” he said.

DJ Champagne shot to fame in 2009 as the official disc jockey for YFM’s drive time show, Dryve Of Ur Life.

Apart from the weekday show, DJ Champagne also played on YFM's hugely popular Saturday afternoon student related programmne, Y-Xpress.

DJ Champagne, who was affectionately called the Music Connoisseur among his peers played at several big concerts and high profile parties in Ghana.

“Times have changed and I’m very proud of what the young ones who came after me are doing.

They need to be encouraged and I’m always ready to share my rich experience with anyone who reaches out to me since the common goal is to make Ghana’s music big,” he added.
