Gospel music is guided by God’s direction, not public applause - Nii Kwei

GHANAIAN Gospel artiste, Godfred Kwei Blankson, widely known as Nii Kwei, has called on fellow musicians to remain steadfast in their divine purpose, emphasising that true ministry is guided by God's direction, not the applause of the public.

He cautioned that paying attention to negative opinions can distract from one's core mission.

In an interview with the Graphic Showbiz on Monday, August 25, Nii Kwei acknowledged that criticism is an inevitable part of a Gospel minister's journey.

“Criticism is like noise; everyone will experience it, but you don’t let it distract you. But I believe it's essential to listen to your inner spirit, which is God. Whatever God tells you to do is what you should do,” he advised.

Nii Kwei, who released a new single, Wayɛ  Ewie, on Friday, August 15, outlined the three core principles of his ministry: love, consistency and intentionality.

He explained that love is the foundational element. “If you have God, you have love; if you have love, you have everything. My ministry is rooted in love; wherever I go, it shines through my outreach and interactions,” he said.

He described consistency as the key to maintaining relevance. “By the grace of God, I have been able to release music and stay focused consistently,” he noted.

Nii Kwei stressed the importance of being deliberate. “This pushes you beyond the status quo and your comfort zone, enabling you to break barriers. I have made it a priority to be intentional with my music and outreach efforts,” he explained.

Addressing practical challenges, Nii Kwei identified funding as a significant hurdle for Gospel artistes. He highlighted the disconnect between the public's perception of glamour and the financial realities of producing music and organising events.

“Music requires money. Nobody should deceive you; it is crucial to making good music,” he stated.

“Many people see artistes shining on stage without understanding the sacrifices, stress or significant financial resources it takes. Yet, if you stay true to your calling and remain consistent, God will make a way in time.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, Nii Kwei shared that he sees challenges as building blocks for growth.

“I have faced challenges but I always say there is a way out of every situation. In every misfortune, there is an opportunity,” he said.

“I am someone who does not dwell on the past. I always ask myself: What lesson can I learn from this? That mindset has helped me turn challenges into opportunities for growth”, he added.
