I’m not arrogant — Bill Asamoah
Actor Bill Asamoah has told the Graphic Youth World that although he is usually arrogant in most of the movies he has starred in, that is not his true character.
“I only act the roles my directors ask me to play and by the grace of God, I am able to deliver perfectly as directed so people think that is who I am,” he said.
In a chat with the Graphic Youth World, he said since Kumawood movies were mostly in Twi, he was able to act creatively, because Twi is his mother tongue, as such, he is more comfortable when expressing himself.
He said although he started starring initially in English movies, an actor does not often choose which film to star in or which production house to work for, pointing out that it was for that reason that he acted in a lot of Kumawood films.
“I still star in English films though, but I am ever ready to work for any production house in the world provided the conditions are right,” he said.
He acknowledged that Kumawood movies played an important role in the revival of the Ghana film industry which was nearly overrun by Nigerian movies some years ago, but was quick to mention that other film-makers in the country also helped in bringing the industry to life again.
Bill, who is also the Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Actors Guild, said regardless of the production, an actor or actress worth his salt should be able to act to bring out the best in himself or herself because he or she can ‘shine’ in English, Twi or both productions.
William Asamoah-Addo (Bill) said apart from acting, he would have been a Public Relations Practitioner as he was currently pursuing a course in that field at the Christian Service University College in Kumasi.
Bill advised young people who wanted to take up acting seriously to “believe in themselves, be disciplined and also respect their chosen profession bearing in mind that experience has always been the best teacher so they should not be in a hurry to be called stars”.
