Gold Stars crowned Ghana Premier League champions

Bibiani Gold Stars FC etched their name into Ghanaian football history yesterday, securing their first-ever Ghana Premier League title with a commanding 4-0 victory over Accra Lions at the Dun’s Park which was thrown into spontanous jubilation after the final whistle.

The emphatic win capped a fairytale season for the Bibiani-based side and confirmed their place at the summit of the table, finishing the campaign with a three-point lead.

The title-deciding encounter was barely underway when Abdul Farouk Amoaful opened the scoring in the 4th minute, sparking wild celebrations from the packed home crowd.

The dream start continued in the 19th minute when Kelvin Oppong doubled the lead, giving Gold Stars a firm grip on the contest.

Lions tamed

Though Accra Lions began to dominate possession in parts of the first half, they struggled to create clear chances, their lack of cutting edge proving costly on a day they desperately needed a result to avoid relegation.

The hosts sealed the triumph in the second half with goals from Samuel Kumi in the 73rd minute and Frank Amankwah in the 90th, putting the game — and the title — beyond doubt.

While Gold Stars celebrated a historic triumph, it was heartbreak for Accra Lions. Last season's runners-up suffered a stunning fall from grace, finishing 15th and confirming their relegation after a dismal and inconsistent campaign.
